Natural Alternatives to Painkillers

There is a wide range of natural remedies and food supplements on the market, many of which can be as effective as aspirin, ibuprofen, paracetamol and other over-the-counter painkillers.
Fish oil:

Fish oil contains two essential omega-3 fatty acids known to block the production of inflammatory chemicals called cytokines and leukotrienes, which are responsible for a range of painful conditions. Researchers have found that eating (or swallowing in tablet form) three grams of fish fats a day relieves the join pain, inflammation and morning stiffness associated with rheumatoid arthiritis and a number of other conditions.

Tumeric:

This popular spice contains curcumin, which is a powerful painkiller, known to block inflammatory proteins and enhance the body's ability to supress inflammation. Studies have shown that it could help stop neurotransmitters from sending pain messages to the brain and researchers recommend consuming 400 to 600 milligrams of tumeric three times a day to reap the most benefits.

Olive oil:

This common kitchen ingredient has been found to contain a natural chemical that acts in a similar way to ibuprofen. Researchers say that 50 grams of extra virgin olive oil is comparable to 10 percent of the ibuprofen dose advised for adult pain relief.

Massage:

Massage aren't simply for relaxation and indulgence. The stimulation to the muscles can relieve a wide range of painful conditions from soreness and injury to headaches and stress.

Acupuncture:

One of the oldest forms of medicine still practised around the world, acupuncture has been endorsed by countless medical studies for a wide range of conditions and can be an effective way of reducing pain and healing injuries.

Heat and Ice:

Ice packs and heating pads can do wonders when applied to a fresh injury. Ice not only helps numb the pain but prevents swelling around the area, allowing it to heal faster. Heat helps relieve stiffness in joints and muscles by encouraging increased circulation in the area, which brings more oxygen and nutrients to the damaged tissues, helping it to heal faster.

Greenery:

A number of plants and herbs have also been found to contain naturally occuring chemicals that help various conditions. Devil's Claw, a native plant of South Africa, has a number of healing properties and is a natural anti-inflammatory commonly used to treat back and arthiritis pain as well as headaches. White Willow Bark is another well-known pain reliever, typically taken in capsule form or in powders used to make tea. In China, the herb Teasel Root is often used to treat lower back pain and has also been found to promote liver and kidney health. Holy Basil, meanwhile, is a natural anti-inflammatory used for a number of ailments including headaches, fevers, back pain and upset stomachs, It is also a powerful antioxidant and has been shown to significantly reduce stress levels.
